SAFETY

Traffic densities in our neighborhoods already spawn higher-than-average auto accident rates. TxDOT’s ill-conceived Spur 527 construction plan will make things worse. Much worse. With freeway traffic flooding local streets, collision rates will skyrocket.

A five-state study published by traffic engineers suggests that West Alabama’s new lane configuration will make this street particularly hazardous: smashups could increase by two-thirds while injuries rise and financial losses nearly triple.

Emergency response? If you have a heart attack or house fire in the next 3 years, better not have it in our neighborhood. With streets clogged during peak traffic hours, fire trucks, ambulances and the police might not reach you in time.

WALQ presented published research to City Council showing a strong likelihood of increased collisions with more injuries. Highly unsafe for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, including children in affected neighborhoods.
